The katana is one of my favorite classical weapons. Originally a simple blade with rough Chinese design cues, it evolved over time to become an elegant weapon, preferred by the warrior Samurai class during the Edo Period of Japan.
The first crude katanas were sasuga, a short sword used by early Samurai who fought on foot in the 1200s.
The sasuga was considered a backup weapon to Samurai, equivalent to a small pistol for today's members of law enforcement.
